VIDEO: Gymnasts Compete for a Cause

Girls from all over northern California will be competing in the 'Mikhail's Navy' competition at Peninsula Gymnastics in San Mateo on Sunday. The group pays tribute to 9/11 victims and raises funds for children orphaned in terrorist attacks.

Hundreds of girls from across Northern California will head to San Mateo for the Mikhail's Navy Competition on Sept. 11.

To pay tribute to victims, responders and survivors of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and the nation's defenders, Peninsula Gymnastics will perform the following acts at the ceremony:

  1. All attendees and gymnasts will receive a red, white, and blue ribbon upon entrance.
  2. All servicemen, servicewomen and veterans will be honored during the opening ceremony.
  3. There will be a moment of silence observed during the opening ceremony.
  4. The gymnasts will carry out the American flag in a ceremony to the national anthem.
  5. There will be a box for donations to The Twin Towers Orphan Fund, and a portion of the proceeds from the meet will also be donated to this fund.

The Twin Towers Orphan Fund was founded on Sept. 11, 2001 for the sole purpose of providing educational and welfare assistance to the children who were orphaned - losing one or both parents - by the terrorist attacks that day. The mission of the Twin Towers Orphan Fund is to provide long-term, higher educational assistance and mental and physical health care assistance for children who lost parents in the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon, or onboard one of the four downed airliners; and children of victims of any future terrorist attacks.
