San Mateo Woman Recognized for Red Cross Service

A San Mateo resident was celebrated Wednesday for more than 25 years of service with the Red Cross.

Each Veterans Day, Americans give thanks to those who have served in the armed forces. But what about recognition for those who supported the armed forces members?

On Wednesday evening, residents gathered in honor of Betty Loop, a 93-year-old San Mateo resident and former Red Cross member who served during times of conflict in the South Pacific, Europe and Vietnam between 1945 and 1971.

While serving oversees, Loop’s responsibilities included providing morale and welfare to U.S. military members, as well as emergency communication services.

She received her recognition and was given a commemorative pin during a meeting of the San Mateo leadership council at the American Red Cross office in Burlingame.

Loop’s recognition is part of the American Red Cross Service to Armed Forces: Our Legacy Continues project. The project, which began in 2011, finds and honors Red Cross staff who served alongside military members during all major wars or conflicts beginning with the Civil War.
