Is the Internet Ruining the Olympics?

Tweets, Facebook updates, Google breaking news alerts, everywhere you turn when online you find out who won hours before it's aired on TV! Do you love it or hate it?

It was bound to happen. There are dozens of sports and hundreds of events in the 2012 Summer Olympics - all happening over the pond in London in a different time zone.

On Monday, minutes before airing Missy Franklin’s time-delayed victory in the 100-meter backstroke, NBC ran a promo for Tuesday morning’s Today show that announced, “When you’re 17 years old and win your first gold medal, there’s nobody you’d rather share it with,” and showed footage of Franklin standing on the medal stand with her gold medal, as well as reuniting with her parents, effectively ruining the suspense for viewers.

NBC and everyone else on the web can only post so many spoiler alerts.

Does the up to the minute information everywhere you turn on the web annoy you so much that it's a deterrent from watching the tape-delayed Olympics on TV or is just a reality that people need to deal with?

After all, the Summer Olympics only comes around every four years. If you love gymnastics, isn't it still an awesome experience to see the women's team win the gold, even if you knew the results eight hours earlier, or does it kill that element of suspense?

I'm with you too Austin and Marc....we have the technology and should use it--LIVE is the way it oughta be. My biggest beef with NBC is what have they done to my Bob Costas? The poor guy looks like the roll him out of bed, into a makeup chair and onto the set...he's lost his pizzazz big time :( And how about show a few more non-Americans??? This IS an international competition after all. The most stunning gymnasts were the Japanese and the Germans last night----not the American men.

My biggest complaint is that they tend to overly promote some people so we get the idea they are failures for getting silver or bronze medals. I am getting plenty of action to look at - four stations and one dedicated to soccer all of the time. It is too bad it has been cold so we cannot fully appreciated the womens volleyball players uniforms.

NBC is ruining the Olympics.

Actually, to be fair- NBC is ruining the Olympics by their horrid editing and delayed broadcast. Why not televise everything live? Then package it for people who want just a summary view during prime time.

Totally agree. We love watching the events, regardless if we know the outcome. An 8:00 start is too late, and then they chop it up and cut out half of the event. I wish NBC would just air the events, and then package it for a prime time recap as someone mentioned it above. Hopefully NBC will lose the Olympic coverage next time - move it to ESPN or something.
