Hillsdale High held off a late charge from host Menlo-Atherton to beat the Bears, 44-42, in a Peninsula Athletic League South Division boys' basketball contest on Wednesday.
Angelo Bautista led the Knights with 14 points. Brian Houle added 12 points and Dante Fontenot had 10.
Alex Manu scored 16 points to help Aragon beat host Woodside, 70-59. Nick Frankel added 12 points and Kevin Hahn had 11.
San Mateo lost to Mills, 77-36, although Jacob Arevalos scored 13 points for the Bearcats.
Girls basketball
Alana Simon had a big scoring game to help host San Mateo open its league season with a 46-42 victory over Mills. Simon finished with 26 points.
Megan Pham scored 16 points but Aragon lost to Woodside, 43-38. Hillsdale dropped a 70-25 decision to Menlo-Atherton.
All three schools will be action again on Friday as part as a quadruple header involving both boys and girls frosh-soph and varsity teams. All action begins at 3:15 p.m.

Community College women's basketball
Not only did the College of San Mateo women's basketball team lose its Coast Conference North Division opener, 62-52, to visiting Chabot on Wednesday but the Lady Bulldogs may have lost another player.
Sophomore guard and co-captain Jenna David left the game after a hard foul and was on crutches afterward. That left coach Michelle Warner with seven available players.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-1, 5-11) were led by TeAnna Price with 12 points while Kate Larson added 10. Amanda Lee scored 11 points to go with six assists.
Angalique Gibbs had 11 rebounds and eight points for CSM, which travels to Skyline College next Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m.
