Key Players in Barry Bonds Trial Have Bay Area Ties

The former San Francisco Giants star player's trial may wrap up this week.

For the past week, witnesses have taken the stand in Barry Bonds’ perjury trial. Bonds is accused of lying to a federal grand jury during the 2003 investigation of Burlingame-based Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO. However, the trial has more Bay Area connections than just BALCO, which was under investigation for sports drug sales.

The would-be key witness in the trial is former-Burlingame resident Greg Anderson, a long-time personal friend of Bonds and his previous trainer. Anderson was ordered to jail last week for refusing to testify in the case. Anderson’s Burlingame home was raided as part of the 2003 BALCO investigation.

Another Bay Area resident involved in the case is Remi Korchemny. The track coach, who worked with many high-profile athletes, including Olympians, was accused of giving BALCO athletes prescription drugs during the BALCO investigation and ensuing trial. He retired in 2007.

Bill Romanowski, a former NFL linebacker who played for both the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders, is also involved in the case. He has previously admitted to taking performance-enhancing drugs from BALCO. He now runs a supplement company in Lafayette called Nutrition53.

Regina Jacobs, another player in the trial and former track Olympian, also has a Bay Area connection. She was a stand-out athlete at Stanford and now works as a real-estate agent in Oakland. The middle-distance runner tested positive for BALCO’s “undetectable” steroid, tetrahydrogestrinone, orTHG, in 2003.

Victor Conte was the president of BALCO. He previously served jail time for BALCO drugs sales. He now runs Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning, a nutrition supplement company, out of San Carlos.
