CSM Track and Field: McDaniel a State Runner-Up in Shot Put

College of San Mateo freshman sensation Evan McDaniel placed second in the men’s shot put at the state track and field championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk over the weekend.

His put of 55 feet, 2 1/4 inches trailed only Aaron Tombleson of Sacramento City, the nation's top-ranked shot putter, who had a personal best 58-7 1/2. McDaniel ranks No. 2 nationally among all community college shot putters and is the top freshman.

CSM’s Josh Uikilifi (Mills High) placed fourth in the hammer, throwing a personal best (180-4) competing with a borrowed left-handed throwing implement. His previous best was 174-2.

National record holder Remy Conatser of Saddleback won the event with a 195-11 throw. He set the national record (217-5) last month.

Uikilifi, who ranks No. 3 in the state in the shot put (just behind McDaniel) failed to make the finals after fouling three times in the prelims.

On the track, CSM freshman Roman Skovronski placed fifth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles (53.54 seconds),  just off his personal best (53.31 in the NorCal Championships at CSM earlier this month).

In the women's circuit, Nikki Uikilifi (Mills), who is Josh's sister, placed in two events, placing fourth in the shot put (42-11 ¾) and sixth in the hammer (160) with personal bests in both.

She is ranked sixth in the state and ninth in the nation among two-year college throwers.

Coast and Northern California champion Laney College won the women’s team championship, led by sprinter Ashton Purvis – who set an national community college record in the 200 meters (22.86) with an Olympic “A” qualifying time. 

CSM placed 13th in the men’s championships with 19 points.
