CSM Notebook: NorCal Track and Field Trials Kick Off Championship Weekend

NorCal trials to showcase CSM throwing champions, world class sprinters.

The Northern California Community College Track and Field Trials kick off a weekend of championship competition at CSM.

The trials will feature CSM contenders in every men's and women's throwing event.

The Bulldogs won seven of the eight throwing titles in last week’s Coast Conference Championships.

Nikki Uikilifi (Mills High) won three of the four women’s throwing events in the conference championships and will contend for titles and state meet berths at the NorCals. She ranks No. 1 in Northern California in the javelin and No. 2 in the shot put, discus and hammer.

On the men’s side, double conference event champion Evan McDaniel ranks No. 2 in the nation on the junior college circuit in the shot put (55-10 ¼). He is No. 6 in the discus throw and No. 10 in the javelin throw in the NorCal rankings.

Conference javelin champion Zeke Edwards ranks No. 5 in Northern California  and conference hammer champion Josh Uikilifi (Mills) ranks No. 3.

Uikilifi is No. 3 in the state in the shot put (53-1 3/4).

CSM also fields strong track entries.

Roman Skovronski ranks No. 2 in the 400 hurdles (53.90 seconds), and sprinter Keith Richardson ranks No. 2 in the 100 and 200 (10.81 and 21.53).

CSM also hopes to contend with its 4 x 100 relay (42.09).

World class speed:

World ranked sprinters Ashton Purvis (Laney College) and Diondre Batson (American River College) are among the meet's featured attractions.

Purvis, the 2010 Gatorade National High School Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2010 at Oakland’s St. Elizabeth High, ranks No. 8 on the all-time high school 100 meter list (11.17 seconds) and No. 9 on the 200 chart (22.90). Both marks were set winning state high school championships.

Her best early times this Olympic season are 11.40 and 23.38 – both ranking on the current international lists. Although Purvis originally attended Miami on a scholarship last year, this is her first season of college competition.

Batson has run 10.13 (wind-aided) for 100, the number 8 clocking by any American so far this season and No. 31 in the world.  His “legal” 200 time of 20.50 ranks No. 11 in the USA and No. 23 in the world.

Purvis and Batson won both sprints for men and women against national fields at the Stanford Invitational last month
