Serra Loses WCAL Basketball Opener

Hillsdale hosts Westmoor today.

 

The Serra High boys' basketball team suffered just its second loss of the season on Wednesday night in the opener of the West Catholic Athletic League schedule.

Henry Caruso recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Padres dropped a 58-52 decision to visiting Sacred Heart Cathedral (1-0, 8-3).


The Irish scored the first six points of the contest and never trailed, although Serra (0-1 in the WCAL, 9-2 overall) managed to tie the game, 8-8, after the first quarter.

Serra will look for its first league victory when it travels to St. Francis in Mountain View for a 7:30 p.m. scheduled tipoff.

The Lancers (1-0, 6-5) opened their league season with a 77-43 win over Valley Christian (0-1, 5-6) while league favorite Mitty (1-0, 7-3) edged Bellarmine (0-1, 10-1), 65-63. St. Ignatius (1-0, 10-1) beat Riordan (0-1, 9-2).

Jacqui Biggins added 11 points for Serra in the loss to the Irish.

Elsewhere, Hillsdale High (8-3) hosts Wesrmoor (10-1) in a nonleague boys basketball game today at 5:30 p.m.

The San Mateo girls' basketball team plays a nonleague game at Notre Dame in San Jose.
