Opening Friday: NDNU Presents Chekhov’s “The Three Sisters”

The classic play, adapted by David Mamet, provides student actors with the chance to bring Chekhov's characters to life with Mamet's unique and powerful dialogue style.

Finding one’s way home is a recurring theme in literature and drama—some use ruby slippers, others follow a breadcrumb trail---but in Anton Chekhov’s “The Three Sisters,” the title siblings will only have each other to find their way home.

This timeless classic about far-off dreams will be presented by Notre Dame de Namur University’s (NDNU) Department of Theatre and Dance Oct. 14-23 in the NDNU Theatre.

“The Three Sisters” is directed by Professor Michael B. Elkins, Chair of the NDNU Department of Theatre and Dance with Assistant Director Laura Hill, and features a cast of NDNU student actors as well as visiting local artists Laura Hill, George Metropulos, Richard Newton, Jeff Young, and Adam Ellison.

This adaptation by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet rediscovers the characteristically modern chords in this poignant story of three provincial sisters who attempt to carve-out a meaningful existence in their small garrison town. Their tedious surroundings are relieved only by a procession of officers, lovers, suitors and husbands, and by the ever-present dream of returning to Moscow.

For this production, the NDNU Theatre has been reconfigured to give the audience a more intimate viewing experience. Theatre-goers will be seated in tiered rows that surround the stage on three sides, thus making them feel part of the production, and offering a more personal connection with the set designed by R. Dutch Fritz and the costumes designed by Barbara Kassal. NDNU student Jennifer Salmeron designed the unique projection images that form the set’s backdrop.
