Nueva School Accepting Applications for New High School

The new high school will eventually be run on a campus located in the Bay Meadows redevelopment in San Mateo.

The Nueva School, an independent preK-8 school, is recruiting its first freshman class for the new high school program that will begin in the fall of 2013.

The new high school will have its own state-of-the-art campus in the Bay Meadows redevelopment in San Mateo beginning in 2014, according to school officials.

Until then, the high school will be located in temporary facilities in San Mateo, minutes from its Hillsborough campus.

“With The Nueva High School, we hope to preserve the high-school experience for continuous learning, growth, and discovery,’’ Diane Rosenberg, Executive Director of The Nueva School, said in a statement.

“High-school students at Nueva will have the opportunity to explore their passions and develop their skills, and will be empowered not just to choose, but to define, their own paths forward,’’ she said.

The new Nueva high school campus will feature a 133,000 square-foot sustainably designed facility on 2.75 acres overlooking a 12-acre public park, with flexible classrooms and seminar spaces, performing and fine arts studios, innovative science laboratories and tech shops, an attached Athletic Center & Gym, extensive Student and Community Center, two-level Writing & Research Center, and a future 425-seat theater.

The site is 7 miles from Nueva’s current campus in Hillsborough.

“We have designed a high school that responds to the pressing social, emotional, and learning needs of today’s teens,’’ Mark Schoeffel, the founding head of the high school, said in a statement.

“True to Nueva’s founding principles, the high school will be a dynamic environment where teachers and students work together, continually thinking, creating, responding, and growing to provide the best possible program for each student.’’

Nueva will be hosting Open House Sessions for prospective high-school students and parents on Oct. 21, Nov. 17, and Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. The school will also offer Information Sessions on Oct. 11 and Dec. 14 at 9 a.m. and Nov. 5 and Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.

See the school’s website for more information: www.nuevaschool.org/highschool or contact Admissions atadmissions@nuevaschool.org, tel. 650-350-4528.
