Cat in the Hat Visits San Mateo School's Literary Garden

A combination birthday party and 'Read Across America Day' sparks interest.

A new library, Dr. Seuss’ birthday and “Read Across America Day” all came together recently at Horrall Elementary School in San Mateo.

Students from kindergarten through third grade were invited to hear a “Read” from Horrall Principal Pattie Dullea and San Mateo-Foster City School District Board Members.

“What better way to celebrate our library Literacy Garden than by having guest readers share their favorite picture books with our students,” Dullea said.

Students in fourth and fifth grade students attended “Read Alouds” by guest readers from the community. Trustees involved included Lory Lorimer Lawson, Julie Chan, Ellen Mallory Ulrich and Audrey Ng.

The Horrall Elementary PTA served green eggs and ham, the school sponsored a door decorating contest and students were allowed to wear pajamas to school to help the celebration.

Dr. Seuss animated films “The Lorax” and “The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot,” were also shown.

“A mountain of gratitude is extended to our wonderful PTA, under the leadership of Amie Sanchez and Marwa Cayli, for their recent additions and changes to our library,” Dullea said. “Inspired by their own creativity and ‘The Reading Bug’ in San Carlos, these hard working moms and dads have transformed our library into child-centered garden of literacy.”

The Garden is part of a balanced literacy program that is literature-based and includes instruction in phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
