Brewer Island Students Deliver Sweet Dreams to Homeless Children

Project Night Night is an organization that donates over 25,000 Night Night Packages each year to homeless children.

The Brewer Island Student Council has partnered with Project Night Night to bring comfort and friendship to children living in homeless shelters, according to the San Mateo-Foster City School District.

Project Night Night is an organization that donates over 25,000 Night Night Packages each year, to homeless children who need childhood essentials to feel secure, cozy, ready to learn, and significant.

"Many of these children have never received anything that is 'new' and are used to receiving hand-me-downs," said Coordinator of Community Services Amber Farinha. "These cute bags show them that people care about them in a very special way."

Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children's book, and a stuffed animal -- all nestled inside of a new canvas tote bag. The bags are then brought to the homeless shelters in the San Francisco Bay Area and are given to children to bring comfort to them as they sleep in an unfamiliar setting.

Project Night Night is Brewer Island's major Social Responsibility fundraiser for this school year. For last year's Social Responsibility fundraiser, Brewer Island participated in the Make-A-Wish Foundation Pocketful of Wishes Drive.

"To kick off their month long drive, the Student Council hosted a school-wide assembly and invited Kendra Stitt Robins, the founder of Project Night Night, to speak to Brewer Island students about the amazing program they were about to begin," said Farinha. "Each class left the assembly with a canvas bag in hand, eager to begin."

The Brewer Island Student Council's goal was to fill 250 bags by the end of the month long drive, which began Jan. 10.

"In first week, students created 28 darling bags, each bursting with an adorable stuffed animal, soft blanket, and a brand new book," said Farinha. "In their second week, students created an incredible 119 bags, for a total of 147 bags in the first two weeks of the drive."
