Bayside S.T.E.M. Academy Crunches Numbers, Competition

San Mateo middle school takes top honors in competitive math event.

San Mateo’s Bayside S.T.E.M. Academy’s math team crunched the competition at a Serra High math competition for middle schools over the weekend.

Bayside S.T.E.M. (which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) had six students place among the top nine out of a field of 180.

Bayside S.T.E.M.’s Michael Wang, Avichal Goel, and Charles Xiao finished in a first-place tie in the team competition, followed by teammates Zion Shih, Alara Slonaker, and Magine Slonaker who took third.

Eric Chen won the math Olympiad, and Charles Xiao took third in the "lightning quick logic" event. 

S.T.E.M. was coached by Jing Filipinas.

The competition featured 60 teams representing public and private schools.
