A Charter High School in SMUHSD?

A proposal is being presented to the San Mateo Union High School District Board to develop a charter school based on Stanford University research.

The San Mateo Daily Journal has reported that an administrator and teacher from Capuchino High have come up with a proposal to start a 400-student charter school within the San Mateo Union High School District.

Capuchino High Assistant Principal Ken Montgomery and Nicole Cerra will be presenting the proposal to the high school board at its meeting today at 7 p.m.

The idea for the name of the school is Ideal High School, or i.hs.

According to a report on the school district's website, the charter school would serve as the district's "R&D department," giving the district a place to develop innovative practices that could be scaled up to the other high schools and other districts. It would be a 9-12 school open to all students within the district's boundaries.

The vision for the charter school pulls from Stanford University research.

No location for the school is mentioned in the report, and neither is Capuchino High's involvement.

The school board meeting will be held at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 East Poplar, in San Mateo.

My understanding of charter schools is that it does not bring in new funding in the school district but rather competes for the same dollars for the existing schools. Why should the district have to open a whole new school to test "innovative" ideas? Why not create the program within a current campus? Opening a new "school" to test ideas makes NO fiscal sense to me.

Thanks for the info. I also think the name is too cheesy. I would suggest them to use the old Crestmoor high school. I think it is a very good thing. Many creative thinker dropped out of school because the traditional education from our public school and UC are not challenge creative thinking. Design thinking is common teaching in design school and it is an essential skill to have if one wants to be a step ahead from others. I am fully support of the idea and would like to see how well they can execute the idea. What is the feed back from the Board?

If they can implement the program in Capucino High school that will be great but I doubt that would ever happen.
