Youth Advisory Committee Sets Goals for 2012

The committee recently reported to the City Council.

The Foster City Youth Advisory Committee set forth goals for 2012 in a recent report to the City Council.

The Youth Advisory Committee "provides opportunities for Foster City youth to develop leadership skills by planning activities for the youth of the community, advising the City Council on the issues that impact them and their peers and participating in leadership-building activities, including leadership roles on subcommittees of the Youth Advisory Committee."

2011 was eventful for the Youth Advisory Committee. One of their focuses is to plan activities that "create community among the youth." Last year's events included a Spaghetti Feed and Halloween Haunted House, Bowditch Graduation Dance and Glow Ball Golf Tournament.

Other 2011 events focused on charity.  Last year, the Youth Advisory Committee sponsored events to raise funds for several charitable and non-profit organizations including the American Cancer Society, Operation Gratitude and the Foster City Youth and Teen Foundation.

"In their advisory capacity, Youth Advisory Committee members served as student representatives to the school district and collaborated and shared ideas with representatives from other youth advisory committees from San Mateo and Santa Clara counties." the city said in a statement.

The Youth Advisory Committee has set the following goals for 2012:

  • To continue to be leaders for the teens in the community
  • To enhance individual member’s personal skills in leadership and in service
  • To continue to serve charitable organizations
  • To promote more youth involvement in Foster City
  • To continue being aware of the issues concerning youth in the community
  • To actively participate in the VIBE development through promotion and fundraising efforts to benefit the Youth and Teen Foundation.

The organization is eager for Foster City's young adult residents to join in the fun.

"All Foster City youth are encouraged to be involved! Although committee membership is set for the current year, the committee’s meetings are open to the public and are held every first and third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Vibe," said the city in a statement. "Youth are further encouraged to participate as volunteers in planning and running events."
