San Mateo County Libraries Earn National Award

San Mateo County Library ranked 17th nationwide and third in California among public libraries with similar budgets.

For the fifth consecutive year, the San Mateo County Library has been named one of the best public libraries in the U.S. by Library Journal.

This year, 7,570 public libraries were evaluated and 262 libraries received star designations, according to a news release from the county library.

The Library Journal Index of Public Library Service rating system used criteria that indicate public use including, number of library visits, circulation of materials, program attendance and public Internet use.

“We are thrilled to be named a Star Library once again this year,” said Director of Library Services Anne-Marie Despain. “While ratings can’t begin to capture the true impact we make every day, it is an honor to have staffs efforts acknowledged as we strive to provide exceptional service to our communities.

The San Mateo County Library is a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) that comprises the cities of Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, Portola Valley, San Carlos, Woodside, and the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County.

The 12 branches, one bookmobile and website (smcl.org) provide innovative, dynamic library services designed to connect diverse communities with opportunities for individual growth and enrichment.
