Peninsula Teens Get Taste of Jobs in Local Government

The MidPen Teen Tour aims to get young students interested in jobs in local government.

A group of junior high and high school students got a taste of careers in local
government on Thursday, as the MidPen Housing properties in San Mateo partnered with the city of San Mateo for the MidPen Teen Tour.

The event, coordinated by San Mateo Management Analyst Rebecca Zito, was a
career day to get young students interested in jobs within the city. Students toured the San Mateo Police Station, a San Mateo Fire Station and roamed the new and developing Bay Meadows area among other stops during the all-day tour.

“I definitely do think that students got a lot out of it. They were definitely
enthusiastic and, by the end of the day, a bit worn out because we took them to so many places,” Zito said. “I think that they really enjoyed themselves and had a lot of good exposure to the variety of jobs in local government.”

And even if students weren’t necessarily interested in local government, they were still able to take home one collective message from most of the speakers during the tour, Zito said.

“I think that what they consistently heard form each department was the
Importance of staying in school,” Zito said. “Pretty much everybody that spoke to them talked about their background and the education that they needed to get to go into the position they have today.”
