Foster City to Install New Signage on Edgewater

The new signage and pavement markings will remind drivers to yield to pedestrians.

Foster City drivers are being reminded to yield to pedestrians with the help of new signage and pavement markings on Edgewater Boulevard.

The week of Sept. 10, Foster City street maintenance crews will be painting Advance Yield Lines and installing corresponding signage at the crosswalks on Edgewater Blvd at northbound Port Royal Avenue. Signage will instruct motorists to “Yield Here to Pedestrians.”

Advance Yield Lines are rows of white triangles painted onto the street surface.  By stopping at the Advance Yield lines, prior to the crosswalks, motorists help to create a safe zone for pedestrians to cross busy streets, according to city officials.

Foster City continues to protect its pedestrians by enforcing crosswalk regulations. Motorists are reminded that pedestrians have the right-of-way when in a crosswalk.

The California Vehicle Code section 21950(a) states, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection...”

The markers are being installed as the next step in a progressive approach to improving pedestrian safety.

Advance Yield Signs are intended to improve driver’s view of pedestrians crossing at these multilane uncontrolled crosswalks, making it safer for pedestrians.

The City Council approved the new traffic markings at its meeting on Aug. 8, 2012.
