Three Killed in Crash on Highway 280 in Redwood City

A driver has been arrested in connection with the crash, which was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Friday.

Three people were killed and two injured when a car that had pulled over due to mechanical problems was struck by a passing vehicle on northbound Interstate Highway 280 Friday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

A Lexus sedan was stopped at the center divider just north of Edgewood Road near Redwood City today around 3:10 p.m. when it was struck by a black Volkswagen that swerved into the center divider, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

Three people in the Lexus, a woman in her late 40s, a 21-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, were pronounced dead at the scene, Montiel said.

A fourth person in the Lexus, a 56-year-old Santa Clara man, survived the crash and was taken to the hospital with injuries, Montiel said.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a man in his early 80s, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He is expected to be arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter upon his release due to reports that he was speeding at the time of the crash and due to the number of people killed, Montiel said.

The crash shut down four lanes, leaving only the far right lane open and backing traffic up for miles. Montiel said the vehicles were being towed away as of shortly after 6 p.m., and he expected the road to reopen by 7 or 8 p.m.

Sometimes when your car breaks down, you can't move it anywhere. My car just died in the middle of the street and I was unable to move it. Just an hour prior I had been on the freeway. It could have turned out just like this terrible accident.

Lots of Patch poster must like to see their words in print. Similar to the twitter world were many can't resist hitting the send or submit button. Exhale and re-read what "we" post might serve us well. Again as in other fatalities, people are dead and yet poster write the most inarticulate things. I know 30 yr olds that act 80 and 80 yr olds that act 30. My mom drove until she was 90. Passed every written test and driving test. I can't say the same for myself. Also before we start typing, check to see if the Caps Lock button is "on" or stuck because it's difficut to read a posters thoughts that use ALL capital letters. Just sayin....

Just because the driver survived doesn't mean he is not going to suffer every day with the knowledge that he killed three people. Good people have caused bad things to happen it doesn't mean smith was a bad person, it's called an accident for a reason. Think about what you say this man has a family that is grieving as much as the family of the victims.
