UPDATE: Teens Arrested in Stolen Vehicle After Police Pursuit from San Mateo to Redwood City

The incident, which involved a 14-year-old boy driving the stolen car, occurred Wednesday evening.

Four teenage suspects were arrested in Redwood City on Wednesday evening after San Mateo police allegedly spotted the teens in a stolen vehicle.

At about 6:35 p.m., a San Mateo police officer spotted a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of Fashion Island Boulevard and U.S. Highway 101, San Mateo Police Sgt. Dave Norris said.

Vehicle theft, according to Norris, is a common crime, and officers are constantly alert to suspicious vehicles and reckless driving as a result.

In Wednesday's case, the car did not yield to an enforcement stop, and the officer initiated a pursuit with lights and sirens onto southbound Highway 101 toward Redwood City.

The suspect vehicle, which was being driven by a 14-year-old boy, exited at Whipple Avenue and ultimately came to a stop on Walnut Avenue in Redwood City, Norris said.

The occupants, three males and a female from San Jose, and ranging in age from 13 to 16, were detained without further incident.

The vehicle they had been driving was confirmed to have been stolen in San Jose, and a replica firearm was located on the rear floorboard of the stolen vehicle.

No officers or suspects were injured during this incident.

The stolen vehicle was emanating smoke as it came to a stop, and spontaneously caught fire while unoccupied after the stop. Assistance was provided during the incident by the Redwood City Police, and Redwood City Fire Departments.
