San Mateo Man Killed in Highway 92 Crash Identified

The crash occurred Sunday night in Foster City.

A 21-year-old San Mateo man killed in a car crash in Foster City that left two others dead as well on Sunday night has been identified as Juan Zaragoza-Hernandez.

Zaragoza-Hernandez was driving on state Highway 92 just west of the Foster City Boulevard exit when at about 9:45 p.m. he lost control of the car, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car hit the guardrail and overturned, then crashed into a utility pole, Montiel said.

Five people were in the car, including three brothers, of Redwood City, sitting in the back seat. Two of the brothers, ages 12 and 16, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released due to their ages.

The other brother, Jesus Reynaga-Reyes, 18, was transported to a hospital with major injuries, Montiel said. Zaragoza-Hernandez was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, he said. 

Another passenger, Eduardo Zaragoza, 18, of San Mateo, was sitting in the front passenger seat and suffered minor injuries, Montiel said.

Montiel said that he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. It is unknown whether any of the other passengers were wearing their seatbelts, he said.

Investigators have not ruled out that alcohol or drug impairment may have  led to the crash, Montiel said.

Two lanes of eastbound Highway 92 were closed for three hours due to the crash.
