Police Detain Escaped Prisoner Near Stanford

The prisoner escaped custody at Stanford University early Thursday morning.

A domestic violence suspect was taken back into custody on the Stanford University campus early Thursday morning after jumping out of a patrol car and evading capture for nearly four hours, police said.

At about 1:30 a.m., officers responded to a report of a domestic violence incident at a home on campus, Stanford police Sgt. Chris Cohendet said.

Scott Foster, a man in his late 30s, was arrested in connection with the case and taken into custody, Cohendet said.

As the patrol car carrying Foster arrived at Stanford police headquarters at 711 Serra St. shortly after 2 a.m., he managed to break free and flee, Cohendet said. He was handcuffed at the time.

Police advised campus residents to lock their doors and windows while officers searched for Foster. Additional units from the Palo Alto Police Department and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office responded to assist in the search.

At about 5:45 a.m., an officer saw Foster emerge from a hiding place near the edge of campus in the area of El Camino Real and Embarcadero Road.

He was still handcuffed, and police apprehended him without further incident.

Foster was rearrested for the additional offenses of resisting arrest and fleeing from officers. He remains in custody in Santa Clara County Jail, Cohendet said.
