Mountain Lion Spotted in San Mateo

The animal was seen Thursday afternoon.

A mountain lion was sighting was reported Thursday afternoon in the San Mateo Highlands area, emergency officials said.

The creature was spotted at about 2:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Sawyer Camp Trail near the Crystal Springs Dam.

Mountain lions reside in more than half of California, and most will try to avoid confrontation. If you see a mountain lion do not approach it, especially one that is feeding or with offspring.

  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Keep a close watch on small children.
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
  • Pick up small children.
