A mountain lion was spotted in San Mateo County's Portola Valley area Wednesday evening, according to emergency officials.
At about 7:15 p.m., the big cat was seen roaming in the 500 block of Westridge Drive, in a rural residential neighborhood.
Residents are advised not to approach mountain lions, and should avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk, and night, when the animals are most active. If a mountain lion is encountered, emergency officials advise residents to try to appear large and make noise.
