San Mateo Police (SMPD) are warning the local community that an armed robbery took place Wednesday afternoon, and the suspect is still at large.
On Wednesday, just before noon, SMPD officers and on-duty detectives responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 700 block of Indian Avenue near North Humboldt Street, in the area of in San Mateo.
The area was immediately saturated with police personnel, who determined that the suspect was no longer at the scene.
According to SMPD spokesperson, Sgt. David Norris, the victim of the armed robbery was a 36-year-old San Mateo resident, who was walking in the area with her two children - a 13-year-old female and a 6-year-old male - when they were confronted by the suspect.
The suspect brandished a handgun and demanded property from the victim. After taking the property, the suspect fled the area southbound, on N. Humboldt Street.
Suspect Description
Sgt. Norris said, the suspect in this case was on foot, and there is no associated vehicle known.
The suspect was described as a white or light-skinned Hispanic male in his late teens to early 20s. He was described as being around 6 feet in height with a stocky build. The suspect appeared to be armed with a handgun.
Investigation is Ongoing
Norris said, SMPD detectives are following up and pursuing all investigative leads.
SMPD is asking for the community’s assistance – anyone who has information about this case, or who may have seen or heard something suspicious in the area during the time period of late morning to early afternoon on Wednesday in the area of College Park Elementary is encouraged to contact the San Mateo Police Department.

This case involves a possible armed suspect - therefore, a statement issued by the San Mateo Police Department urges members of the community not to approach or confront any potentially armed suspect.
