Man, Teenage Girl Rescued from Capsized Sailboat Near San Mateo Bridge

The incident occurred Friday afternoon.

A 50-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl were rescued from the chilly waters of the Bay near the San Mateo Bridge Friday afternoon after the 18-foot sailboat they were in capsized, according to an article in the San Jose Mercury News.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a mayday call from the troubled water craft at about 3:31 p.m., and sent a 45-foot Coast Guard vessel and a rescue boat from Alameda County.

The boat capsized around a mile and a half south of the bridge, stranding the man and girl in the water around 200 yards away from the boat, Alameda County fire department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

The man and girl were in the water for about 45 minutes prior to being rescued. They were taken to shore and are currently being checked out by emergency medical technicians, but did not appear to have suffered any major injuries.

The Coast Guard vessel returned to the sailboat to tow it back to shore.
