Man Killed Trying to Help Crash Victims on Highway 280

A man was fatally struck by a car early Sunday morning in Redwood City after he stopped on the side of the highway trying to help victims of a crash.

One person was killed and another arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol following a multi-car collision on Interstate Highway 280 in Redwood City early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to the crash at about 2:40 a.m. on southbound Highway 280 north of Woodside Road, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

Responding units found a silver Toyota SUV and a black Honda sedan blocking lane Nos. 1 and 2, along with debris in all southbound lanes.

Police also discovered a man laying on the right shoulder.

A preliminary investigation indicates the black Honda was traveling south on Highway 280 north of Woodside Road at an unknown speed when, for unknown reasons, the driver allowed the front of the Honda to come into contact with the rear end of the Toyota, Montiel said.

The impact caused the driver of the Toyota to lose control and the Toyota collided with the center divide of Highway 280 southbound, north of Woodside Road.

Shortly after that a silver Jeep stopped on the right shoulder near the collision scene and the driver stepped out of the Jeep to assist the parties located within the lanes.

It appears that as the driver was walking across the freeway lanes of Highway 280, he was struck by an oncoming Infiniti SUV that was also traveling south on Highway 280 north of Woodside Road.

This collision is currently under investigation, though the driver of the black Honda was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI (Driving Under the Influence), Montiel said.

Due to the amount of debris on the roadway, all four lanes of southbound Highway 280 were closed for about three hours during the investigation.

Any witnesses to this collision are asked to contact CHP Officer Joe LaFauci at (650) 369-6261.
