Authorities are investigating the shooting of an intruder this morning in Foster City.
The shooting occurred just after police received reports of an intruder on the 600 block of Crane Avenue at 4:22 a.m., police Capt. Jon Froomin told Patch.
A 24-year-old San Mateo man was shot by a houseguest by the time police arrived minutes later.
The intruder was hospitalized with unspecified wounds and was undergoing surgery, however his status wasn’t immediately known, Froomin said.
Police identified the shooter as a Brentwood man in his 40s.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the Foster City incident, which comes amid the controversial shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a teenager shot to death in Florida last month by a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, which raised questions about civilian use of deadly force. Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles when he was killed.
“We’ll see what we can get, and then the DA makes that decision,” Froomin said.
The shooter, who police said fired a pistol at the intruder, has not been arrested.
Froomin said police have not yet determined who owned the pistol or whether it was a registered firearm. It was not immediately known if the shooter has a criminal history.
The shooting follows a series of residential crimes that have left a sleepy middle class suburb known for clean streets and low crime on edge.
The of Klaus Gachter, 71, who was found dead in his home on the 600 block of Waturbury Lane, was Foster City’s first reported homicide in nearly six years. The case remains under investigation.
Police are also investigating a spate of daytime residential burglaries earlier this month.
Froomin said there is no indication the intruder who was shot on Sunday was involved in the burglary ring.
“We’d like to interview him to see what he was doing there,” Froomin said.
