Driver Smashes Into San Mateo Fire Station

Police say drunk driving caused Oakland woman to lose control of her vehicle at Highway 92 off-ramp and De Anza Boulevard.

A woman crashed her SUV into a San Mateo fire station Monday night, and police announced this morning that alcohol is to blame and that the driver is being charged with felony drunk driving and child endangerment.

The crash happened at about 11 p.m. Monday, when the woman, identified as 36-year-old Lasheena Cardona of Oakland, lost control of her GMC Yukon on a state Highway 92 off-ramp, left the roadway and hurtled into a garage door of San Mateo Fire Department's Station 27 on De Anza Boulevard, San Mateo police Sgt. Dave Norris said.

According to police, the firefighters inside Station 27 rushed out to find Cardona unconcious behind the wheel and her 17-year-old daughter injured in the passenger seat. Also, "extensive damage occurred to the fire station building," police said.

Cardona and her daughter were taken to the nearest trauma center for treatment. The daughter suffered only minor injuries, but Cardona remains hospitalized as of Tuesday, police said, adding that "She appeared to be heavily intoxicated, but did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries from the collision."

No one at the fire station, located at 1801 De Anza, was injured, although on-duty firefighters said they were jolted by the crash.
