Deer Carcass Discovered Near Suspected Mountain Lion

The incident occurred over the weekend in San Mateo County.

A mountain lion was heard in the back yard of of home in Emerald Hills early Friday, and a deer carcass was discovered in the same spot later that morning.

San Mateo County emergency officials said the reporting party found the carcass of a deer after hearing the creature around 3 a.m. in the back yard of 747 Oakview Way.

The carcass was removed by the SPCA and the incident was reported to the Sheriff's Office on Monday.

Tips on encountering mountain lions in the wild:

  • If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation. 
  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night. 
  • Keep a close watch on small children. 
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
