County's Anti-DUI Program Sees Rise in Arrests

The summertime crackdown on DUIs leading up to Labor Day has seen more arrests this year than last year in San Mateo County.

In its first weekend, the "Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI" campaign has garnered more arrests in San Mateo County than this time last year, police said.

During the national and local crackdown, 12 more people were arrested for DUIs between Aug. 19 and Aug. 24 than this same period last year, Daly City police said. San Mateo County officers arrested 77 people this week after arresting 65 this time last year. Police saw a spike in these arrests on Saturday, following the 49ers/Raiders game at Candlestick Park, Sgt. David Mackriss said. There were no DUI deaths and one injury collision reported by the California Highway Patrol, police said.

"Avoid the 23" is San Mateo County's anti-DUI campaign and has been in service for nearly 20 years, Mackriss said.
