CHP Warns to Avoid Pulling Over on Highways (VIDEO)

San Mateo County CHP Officer Art Montiel sat down with Patch on Thursday to explain why it's dangerous -- and illegal -- to pull over on highways.

San Mateo County CHP Officer Art Montiel sat down with Patch on Thursday to explain why it's dangerous -- and illegal -- to pull over on highways.

It's a subject many have been thinking about, as the Peninsula saw two fatal crashes in a period of two weeks recently involving cars that were pulled over on the freeway.

In each crash, three people were killed, for a total of six deaths. Several others were also injured.

The . A family of six - two parents and their four daughters - were traveling on Highway 101 in San Bruno coming back from a shopping trip in Gilroy when their vehicle crashed into a CHP car assisting a broken-down truck that had pulled over onto the shoulder. Two of the sisters were killed, and the remaining survivors are still hospitalized.

The second crash took place last week on Dec. 14, at Edgewood Road and Highway 280 near Redwood City. A man in a Volkswagen hit a Lexus that was pulled over on the shoulder due to a flat tire. Three of the four people in the Lexus were killed.

Watch our video to see what Officer Montiel suggests are the safest courses of action if an emergency arises and you need to pull over on the freeway.
