Cal Fire Continues Burn Ban

The burn ban is in effect in numerous Bay Area counties, including Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has continued its burn ban in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Western Stanislaus, San Benito, Monterey and Western San Joaquin counties, fire officials announced this week.

Several weather-related factors contributing to this ban include continued low relative humidity levels, continued absence of significant precipitation, and periods of moderate sustained winds across the higher ridges in the region.

The three units involved have also experienced several wildland fires even with the ban in effect.

This ban is expected to continue through this weekend. Anyone with questions about this declaration is urged to contact the nearest Cal Fire facility.

Cal Fire is also reminding residents to properly dispose of fireplace or BBQ-related ashes. There have been several recent local fires where Cal Fire investigators have determined that ashes improperly disposed of in backyards or the wildland were the cause.

Residents should place their ashes in an empty metal can with a lid, not in a garbage can as it could catch fire. Add water to the can and stir it to cool off any hot spots. Finally, let the can sit for several days to ensure that the ashes are completely out.
