Boy Declared Unfit to Stand Trial for March Assault

Four boys already sentenced for their roles in the attempted rape of two 12-year-old classmates.

One of five boys who confessed to waging a sexual assault on two 12-year-old classmates has been found mentally unfit to stand trial, according to a story in the San Mateo Daily Journal.

The alleged battery took place during a school field trip to Stulsaft Park in March.

School authorities said they adhered to the policy mandating one adult for every 10 students on field trips.

Reports of the assault provoked outrage and horror in the community. Critics questioned how it was that the chaperones were oblivious to a crime in progress, and how the group of students became estranged from their classmates.

The incident only came to the attention of school officials three months afterward, when the girls confided to a counselor that they had been the victims of an attack.

The other four boys have already been adjudicated. Three confessed to committing a lewd and lascivious act on a minor under 14 and were sentenced to 120 days at the county juvenile hall; another received a 60-day sentence. The judge ordered all four to receive counseling.
