Back-to-School Safety Tips from Foster City Police

The San Mateo-Foster City School District and the San Mateo Police Department are reminding parents, drivers, and pedestrians big and small about some important traffic safety tips for the 2013-2014 school year.

The following back-to-school safety tips have been provided by the Foster City Police Department and the San Mateo-Foster City School District.

Driving and Pedestrian Safety Tips – School Commute and Drop-Off

• Please drive slowly around the schools when children are present.
• Drivers MUST yield to pedestrians crossing in a crosswalk.
• Pedestrians crossing the street must use marked crosswalks. Most school campuses have numerous marked crosswalks in their areas.
• Whenever possible, drop off schoolchildren at locations where they do not have to cross the street.
• Transport children in the car in a manner that allows them to exit from the passenger side of the vehicle, closest to the sidewalk.
• When dropping off children - pull to the curb safely, have children exit carefully, and depart immediately to allow others to safely conduct drop-offs of their children. DO NOT leave your vehicle unattended in white curb zones.
• Do not block crosswalks, driveways, red curb zones, or fire hydrants.
• Left turns into and out of the on-campus drop off area are discouraged.
• In some cases, it is illegal to make U-turns near the school. U-turns should always be avoided when traffic is heavy.
• BE COURTEOUS to fellow parents and residents.
• Remain alert and encourage others to follow these safety tips.
