Police arrested a 25-year-old San Carlos man following a vehicle pursuit that began in Belmont and ended when the vehicle crashed in San Mateo on Thursday morning.

At about 3:20 a.m. on Thursday, a Belmont police officer on patrol in the 400 block of Ralston Avenue ran a license plate check on a red 1994 Honda Civic and learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of San Mateo, police said.

The suspect, Mitchell Lashley, proceeded to travel north on U.S. Highway 101. The Belmont police officer followed the suspect vehicle and waited for additional police units before attempting to stop the suspect vehicle, according to police.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle on U.S. Highway 101 near Third Avenue, but Lashley accelerated and took the Dore Avenue exit.

Officers pursued the suspect vehicle onto southbound Bayshore Boulevard to Second Avenue, police said.

Lashley was unable to compromise a sharp curve in the road and crashed into a guardrail, according to police.

He then fled the vehicle on foot and was found a short time later in a nearby yard.

Lashley was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicle theft, evading police, resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools, hit and run and driving on a suspended license, according to police. He was booked into San Mateo County Jail.
