Webinar/Symposia Archive, Sequester Effect on NIH, glassybaby

I am providing three quite different resources to you today.

One is pure fun (see the material about “glassybaby” (colored votive candle holders) at the end).

Another is a trove of educational reading (webinars and symposia).  The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has been holding webinars regularly (roughly monthly) and symposia in various cities (roughly quarterly) on a broad range of topics.  All the material is posted on PanCan’s website.

The third portion is a link discussing the pernicious effects of the federal sequestration.  I wrote a short Letter to the Editor of the San Jose Mercury a few days ago, but Dr. Weaver’s article is much more complete.

My Letter is one of several in the following:

Current Diagnostic Tools is particularly well done as one can see the speaker’s pointer showing how to interpret CT scan images.

The webinar by Dr Yao on NeuroEndoctrine Tumors (NET) lacks audio, but its page 4 (comparing mortality vs time in months for NET and non-NET) is especially interesting.  NET is much less prevalent (about 5%) than non-NET adenocarcinoma.  Clinical Trials (see PALS) can improve survival greatly!

Here is a link to PanCan symposia:

Here is a link to "United for Research," by Valerie Weaver, PhD at UCSF.

Dr. Weaver notes "5 more years of the sequester and Congress will have destroyed the best science community in the world"

Now the fun …

Check out glassybaby (attractive colored votive candle holders).  glassybaby just opened a store in SF at 3665 Sacramento Street.  A friend in PanCan’s Puget Sound affiliate wrote: I am writing to make sure that the Bay Area Affiliate is aware that 'glassybaby' is including its newly opened San Francisco store in a 'launch event' on Saturday, Dec 14th 9:00AM - noon.  10% of all sales for any color glassybaby purchased in-store or online that day will go to PanCan. One must use promo code: PANCAN AND glassybaby provides FREE shipping!  The launch event is to kick off glassybaby’s Community Ambassadorship with PanCan designating the “sweet pea" glassybaby, a purple glassybaby, to represent pancreatic cancer. 10% of the sales of "sweet pea" will be donated to PanCAN until January 2014!
