More Than Dogs and Cats

The Peninsula Humane Society is not only home to cats and dogs, but also cares for sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife.

This headline is a line we use quite often when describing our work. Most folks think of a humane society as a place where people look for a lost dog or cat, or visit with hopes of adopting one.

And, many animal shelters, SPCAs and humane societies across the county have a mission that focuses on those two services.

My organization, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, reunites people with lost pets and operates what we think is the Bay Area’s most magnificent adoption center.

But, our work includes much more. For starters, we are one of just a handful of humane societies in the entire country that also cares for and devotes significant resources to sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife.

All this work is funded entirely by donations. At any given time, we care for up to 200 wild animals and may see 5,000 for an entire year!

The role is simple: assess and treat their issue, then release them back into their natural habitat.

This week’s interesting patient was a barn owl. More to come soon on his (or her?) story…
