Find a Fitness Role Model To Look Up To

Finding someone similar who has accomplished the goals you have set for yourself can motivate you to live healthier and workout harder.

Thank you Britney Spears—for you are my fitness role model and my motivation.

I repeat my FITNESS role model.  I do not seek to have your life, career, conservatorship arrangement, ex-husbands/ex-boyfriends (Even Justin Timberlake?), or any of your—um—experiences.  

I simply use her as my inspiration and my workout buddy.

After wishing to look like certain models, actresses, singers and celebrities I settled on Britney because we have the same body type—we’re built a little thicker than, say, Christina Aguilera. Also, we’ve both had kids.

Sure, I don’t have a trainer I pay a bunch of money to who comes to my house to work me out in my private gym nor do I have a chef, nutritionist or any other fancy tool she can afford to keep in shape. I also don’t give two-hour concerts every night.

I take this into account. I know I may not look exactly as fit as she does, but in her, I can see what’s attainable. I have inspiration.

Another thing Britney does for me is provide my motivation for my workouts. This week, I did not want to get on the elliptical, but I knew Britney was waiting for me (on my iPod). I have a workout playlist filled with Britney’s best beats that keeps my legs moving a decent pace. I workout—dancing on that elliptical and dreaming about myself having a body like Britney.

Do I sound weird? That’s OK. Britney is one thing that keeps me going. I’m not ashamed (especially when I’ll be flaunting my ripped abs some day).

If you haven’t found a fitness role model yet, I encourage you to do so. I’m not really asking you to compare yourself to someone. Just find someone who has the body and healthy lifestyle you’d like—someone you can look to as a guide. It can be a celebrity or a friend or relative—it would be nice if you knew and could talk to your fitness role model when you need advice and encouragement. Maybe I’ll talk to Britney some day.

Stop laughing.

The most important piece is choosing someone with the same body type. I have a certain body type, and there’s nothing I can do about it. I have some meat on my bones and I’m solid. I can’t change that and I can’t expect to look like some of the women I used to envy. There is just no way.

After that, you can get as detailed as you want. Find someone with the same lifestyle (full-time job, kids, etc.), someone who lives in the same area (so you are exposed to the same resources), or someone who has the same challenges or weaknesses. It should be someone similar to you that can look at and see that they reached the goals you have and you can do it, too.

I happen to be lucky enough that my fitness role model also releases some pretty good music to workout to. So, as I’m listening to her, I’m getting more motivation not just with the music but with her “presence” during my workout.

If your fitness role model isn’t a kicking pop singer, post some pictures of him or her where you workout. You could also create and inspiration board or vision board that houses a collection of pictures, quotes and other things that can keep you motivated and post that by your workout space. Workout in a gym or outside? Take a peek at your fitness role model before your workout and keep that image in your head.
