Week in Review: County Braces for Early Prison Releases; 1930 Little Big Game Ticket Stub for Sale on eBay

A round-up of major news stories from the past week.

Monday, Jan. 9

An estimated 500-600 “low-level” offenders who’ll be released from state prison over the next four years as a result of budget cuts will he headed to San Mateo County, and most of them won’t be going to county jail, a leading law enforcement official whose department will be responsible for monitoring the convicted criminals told Patch in advance of a on Tuesday to discuss the early releases.

The influx of prison inmates who haven’t yet served their sentences onto the streets of San Mateo County – and throughout the state - comes as a result legislation signed by Gov. Jerry Brown last year.

The state legislature passed AB 109 in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that the state’s prison overcrowding created the potential for human rights violations.

The purpose of the town hall meeting was to involve the community in the implementation of the bill, also known as the Plan for Public Safety Realignment, San Mateo County Chief Probation Officer Stuart Forrest told  Patch.

Tuesday, Jan. 10

Jury selection in the charged with opening fire on two neighbors began on Tuesday.

Jesse David Wilson, 40 of Foster City, faces seven felony charges including two counts of attempted murder for allegedly opening fire on five people on a summer night in 2010 during a dispute that followed a ruckus in a nearby lagoon where the alleged victims were canoeing.

Opening arguments are expected to begin on Tuesday in a case that will go an estimated three to four weeks, Assistant District Attorney Brian Donnellan told Patch.

 

Wednesday, Jan. 11

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo) released a statement to mark National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Sex trafficking is considered the third-largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world, according to Speier's office.

Prosecutors filed criminal charges against a Foster City woman for allegedly fleeing the scene of a .

Jenny Quan, 44, was charged with misdemeanor hit and run for driving away from the scene of a non-injury accident involving a cyclist on her way to Bowditch Middle School on Nov. 1.

She faces up to six months in jail.
