As nearly 1,000 Republicans pour into Burlingame this weekend for the California GOP Convention at the , residents can expect normal traffic conditions while driving around town.
“The hotels are used to handling large events,” said Burlingame Police Department Director of Traffic Chuck Witt. “There’s generally no need for any kind of traffic control."
Although Republican officials such as Newt Gingrich, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and California Congressman and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy will all be present, Witt knew of no expected road closures.
While road closures can occur while politicians are in town, they are normally done at the elected official's request if traveling with a security unit.
Burlingame hotel employees are no strangers to conventions, from large business events to weddings to sorority and fraternity gatherings.
“It’s like any other convention out there,” Witt said. “They’re equipped to handle [them].”
