Sunday Night Traditions

One of my favorite ways to relax on weekends is cooking.

Sundays nights, the aromas blend and float across the various rooms of our house as the children play and friends and family chat about everything from movie star gossip and the state of affairs in Foster City. For me, it is a day to recollect, reconnect, and reinvent myself and a new food creation.

The day starts the same, an early morning boxing workout, and four more classes for our members, and a birthday party for a youngster who is one step closer to college. Then it is off to the Whole Foods market.

Food and Wine, NY Times, and Saveur magazines in hand I am ready to purchase the supplies needed to test the latest recipe. This week, it was Salt Cod and little neck clams, with corn and white wine reduction, Indonesian marinated skirt steak, Puerto Rican marinated Pork Chops, and a Spanish Chorizo long rice dish. Of course a generous helping of sourdough bread to sop up the sauces.

Chaos abounded while I cut, diced, stirred, and sautéed; children bounding jumping, laughing, and crying in equal parts. For at least one night a week, I can play the part of a master chef, creating food that will make people smile in anticipation of the next bite. Hopefully, I will conquer a personal challenge; to perfectly cook long grain rice ( without peeking or stirring to often.)

The food complete we all sat down to enjoy what I hoped would be a culinary potpourri of international flavors. The sounds of the day slightly muted by the sounds of forks and spoons against the plates, the chaos slightly subdues.

This tradition is not unique to our family or friends. The tradition has a long history before us and those we know. However, I own it now as a tradition for us for now and forever. It is a time to re-energize, refocus, and realize that everyday Family Matters.
