Merit vs. Seniority

Leadership in Foster City

Solutions are the result of good planning and introspection with an eye to consensus-building and acceptance by all. Good solutions solve problems while a poor solution delays or postpones a problem. Challenging times provides the perfect environment for identifying good leadership. I have found good leadership to be based upon a meritocracy rather than an entitlement or seniority.

In our personal lives we choose to follow those who are successful and create success in their respective arenas. When chooses schools, colleges, cars, products, we choose the best we can afford and that has a history of success.

It seems that in times of great challenges, great challengers arise. They seem to possess the requisite skill-sets to manage the seemingly endless stream of problems that have yet to be solved.  Problems are challenges in that they are often solvable with the correct balance of reflection, analysis,  input and action.

Even in the most prosperous of times, we have been faced with financial and structural problems that affect every aspect of our community. They affect our families, schools, social groups, sports, City and State. Foster City has been blessed with great leadership and a budgetary surplus that has allowed us to provide quality services to all members of our community. Moreover we have been able to share our success with those who choose to avail themselves of our plentiful public spaces.

As we move forward into the financial and structural challenges ahead we may need to rethink our approach to solutions and reassess what Foster City is and what it can be. New generations of families have re-invested in the vision of Foster City’s founder. Our planned community is now faced with unforeseen challenges that will require leaders of merit and experience who can work together to address the needs of all of us.
