The Peninsula Humane Society will hold its 18th annual Mutt Strutt dog walk/fundraiser for dog owners in San Mateo on Aug. 18.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. at Coyote Point Park, located at 1701 Coyote Point Drive in San Mateo, with the meandering 3K stroll set for 11 a.m.
The humane society is also offering a shorter, 1K walk, also set to begin at 11 a.m. PHS/SPCA will give an event T-shirt to all registrants and ever-popular event bandanas to their dogs.
The annual event raises money and awareness for shelter animals at PHS/SPCA awaiting adoption. In recent years, the Mutt Strutt has drawn between 400 to 500 people and raised more than $60,000 annually.
In addition to the walk, participants can enjoy animal-related vendor booths, animal demonstrations, prizes, and music. Dogs can compete in pre-walk contests to earn the title of “Most Talented” or “Best Costume.” Contests will be hosted by PHS/SPCA President Ken White and judged by representatives from our major sponsors.
In addition to the $28 registration fee, PHS/SPCA encourages participants to collect pledges and will give prizes to individuals at the $100, $200, $300, $400 and $600 levels, as well as a night’s stay at pet-friendly Stanford Inn in Mendocino for the top fundraiser.
“If each walker asked 10 friends for $10 each, we could significantly change the lives of hundreds of homeless animals who need specialty care or attention before they can be made available for adoption,” said White.
Coyote Point Park, with Bay views along its winding trails, is open to dogs just this one day each year. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and PHS/SPCA asks that each participant walk just one dog. All participants must park at Coyote Point Park.
Last year, PHS/SPCA took in more than 4,000 stray, injured, abused or abandoned dogs, and, for the sixth straight year, found a new home for every healthy, adoptable dog. With funds raised during Mutt Strutt, PHS/SPCA will be able to make a greater number of treatable animals well so they, too, can be adopted.
Major event sponsors are David Rio; Diamond Pet Foods; EPIC; Lynn Porto, Pet Friendly Realtor; Pet Food Express; PETCO; and Wells Fargo.
