Purim marks the day in which the Jewish people were saved from a royal decree to kill the entire nation in Ancient Persia some 2,000 years ago. As one of the happiest days on the Jewish calendar, the holiday of Purim is typically celebrated by reading the story, dressing up, eating a lavish feast, giving gifts to the needy and friends, and plenty of merry-making. This event includes all that – and more.

Rabbi Yossi Marcus, Director of Chabad of the North Peninsula, says the goal at all Chabad programs is to bring ancient texts and events to life. “We aim to show that our holidays are as relevant today as ever before. That’s why we make sure they are fun, enjoyable and meaningful.”

About Chabad of the North Peninsula

Chabad is one of the largest and fastest growing Jewish educational organizations, with over 3,700 centers worldwide—from Shanghai to Hartford, from Costa Rica to Safed. Chabad is devoted to providing Jewish education on all levels in a friendly, non-judgmental environment through creative and innovative programs and activities.
To many, the word Chabad connotes a warm smile, an unconditional love for every human being and an extraordinary commitment to Jewish education. Chabad's doors are open to all, regardless of affiliation, background or current level of Jewish practice and knowledge.

Chabad's success and dedication is in large measure due to the passion and vision of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of blessed memory, who led Chabad from 1950 until his passing in 1994.

About Purim
The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.”
Traditional Purim observances include the reading of the megillah (book of Esther), which recounts the story of the Purim miracle, giving money gifts to the poor, sending gifts of food to friends, and enjoying a festive Purim feast. It is also customary for children to dress up in disguising costumes.
