Storm Snarls Air Traffic at SFO

No delays reported at Oakland International, San Jose Mineta. Air travelers advised to contact airlines for updates.

A weather system that is bringing rain to the Bay Area today has  resulted in flight delays and cancellations at San Francisco International  Airport, an airport duty manager said this morning.

As of 9:30 a.m., 32 arriving flights and 29 departing flights had  already been canceled, duty manager Larry Mares said.

"It's gonna be a tough day," he said.

Mid-morning, the airport was reporting delays averaging 30 minutes  for both arrivals and departures because of a weather-related ground delay  program put into effect by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA projects that delays of up to five hours are possible in a  worst-case scenario, but Mares said that in reality, the delays likely will  not be that lengthy.

"As airlines cancel flights, it lessens the congestion" and the  delays, he said.  Travelers arriving at or departing from SFO are advised to contact  their individual airlines before leaving for the airport today.

Significant delays were not reported at the Bay Area's other major  airports, Oakland International Airport and Mineta San Jose International  Airport.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system is  expected to pass through the Bay Area sometime this afternoon, affecting the  southern counties by this evening.

"It might be a bit gusty, especially up at the hilltops,"  forecaster Diana Henderson said.  No wind advisories are in effect or are anticipated.
