A mountain lion was spotted in San Mateo County's Portola Valley area early Monday morning, emergency officials said.

The mountain lion was seen near Farm Road and Woodview Lane at around 3:30 a.m., officials said.

Residents are advised not to approach mountain lions, and should avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk, and night, when the animals are most active.

In the event of a mountain lion encounter, emergency officials advise residents to try to appear large and make noise and to notify the sheriff's office immediately.
