Flights Delayed Due to Fog

Delays expected to end after fog lifts.

Foggy conditions around much of the Bay Area have delayed flights at San Francisco International Airport this morning, but weather officials expect the fog to lift before noon.

Airport duty manager Dan D'Innocenti said arriving flights have been delayed by 60 to 90 minutes because of the dense fog, which has also slowed travel on the region's bridges.

The fog has disrupted travel beyond the Bay Area, with airports up and down the West Coast affected. D'Innocenti said there is a chance that some flights destined for affected airports, such as those near San Diego, may be canceled.

"Some of the planes that don't have the navigational capabilities to fly into the smaller airports might get canceled," D'Innocenti said.

Flow control began at the airport at about 8 a.m., and the delay program is scheduled to remain in effect until 4 p.m., but only if the fog continues to linger, he said. "If the fog improves, we'll be able to get back to a full operation," D'Innocenti said.

"We're just keeping our fingers crossed that Mother Nature will cooperate and allow us to get back to normal."

That is expected to happen, as forecasters for the National Weather Service said a fog advisory currently in effect is still set to expire at 10 a.m. Conditions are expected to improve shortly thereafter, forecasters said.

Meanwhile, flights are on schedule at the Bay Area's other major airports. Mineta San Jose International Airport spokeswoman Vicki Day said no delays were reported at the airport as of 9:30 a.m.

Oakland International Airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said this morning, "Everything's running smoothly today here in Oakland." Although most of the holiday travelers have returned home by now, the volume of travelers at the airports remains relatively strong, Barnes said.

With people returning to work today, an influx of business travelers are making up for the drop-off in holiday travelers, she said.

"It will be a fairly steady day with that mix of travelers," she said.
