Updated: BART Service Remains Unaffected After Tsunami Warning

BART officials previously thought service may have been shut down this morning.

BART service has not been affected by tsunami waves expected to arrive in the Bay Area throughout the morning, agency spokesman Linton Johnson said.

BART officials initially considered shutting down service through the Transbay Tube between Oakland and San Francisco and at stations down toward Daly City when the tsunami warning was issued early this morning, Johnson said.

However, after looking closely at reports coming in from around the Bay Area and elsewhere in California, BART officials do not consider the waves substantial enough to shut down service, he said at about 8:40 a.m.

The Transbay Tube and the San Francisco and Peninsula stations are underground or below sea level, and could potentially be damaged if the waves were higher, Johnson said.
