Safeway Stores Pull ‘Pink Slime’ Beef

The removal of "lean finely textured beef" applies to all Safeway stores.

Safeway has announced it will no longer sell its "lean finely textured beef," also known as "pink slime" to the public, according to a blog on SFGate.com.

Safeway released the following statement:

Safeway is committed to providing our customers with the highest-quality products. While the USDA and food industry experts agree that lean finely textured beef is safe and wholesome, recent news stories have caused considerable consumer concern about this product. Safeway will no longer purchase ground beef containing lean finely textured beef.

According to SFGate.com, Karen Darnell at Safeway headquarters in Pleasanton,  said the statement applies to all of Safeway’s stores in the United States, including the on 921 East Hillsdale Boulevard.

There are also three local Safeway stores in San Mateo, one on 1655 El Camino Real, and the others on 100 Crystal Springs Road and and 860 North Delaware Street.
